‘Here we go, we need to buy new software by the end of this quarter. The current one sucks!’

A decade ago or so, it would be easy for an organization to choose and allocate its digital tools. However, the story is quite different nowadays. That is why many business owners and executives constantly search, research, subscribe, and change their digital resources. For example, at least 25+ marketing automation brands are in the market. They are designed to be used by small to large businesses.

As an entrepreneur or one of the decision-makers, you usually get to know a prospect's digital software or service from different sources, such as referrals, sales calls, organic searches, conferences, or sponsored ads. Remember, take your time even though you have a recommendation from a trusted source.

The simple digital tools selection strategy

First, you should have at least one or two options for comparisons before making the final decisions. Carrying out a comparison process can reduce bias factors that lead to irrational or distorted conclusions.

Second, by knowing your priority needs, the user's (employees) readiness, and the expected outcomes, you can compare the products/ services in terms of their features, functionality, and term of conditions.

Third, pricing is vital to consider. For more expensive pricing, you can negotiate a better price and term with the sales representative from the vendor. However, the loss of your company would be much higher if the product/ service is unsuitable. In many cases, it is better to subscribe to the monthly plan for one to a few months before getting the annual plan, although you might save a lot from the yearly subscription discount.

Additionally, having a few months to test-drive the digital technology allow your team to evaluate if they can use this digital tool to improve their work and match their skills. If they don't like the product, it is not too late to switch to another option without losing many resources.

What would be the cost, if the digital tools are not right?

Some of the potential risks of making hasty digital tool decisions could result in

- reducing team morale and employee satisfaction

- spending an extra 50%+ of budget and time to acquire a replacement

- hindering client relationship

- disrupting the workflow of the team

At last, do remember to monitor the user's experience and the ROI (or Return on Investment) after integrating this new digital resource. That will be an essential reference to decide if you want to renew the subscription next time. If you're still uncertain, getting a second opinion (i.e. a comprehensive digital strategy) from a digital business consultant is practical and valuable.
